I've met many Chinese with this kind of excessive pride in them, and I think that is the result of low self-esteem. This is not a Chinese only problem, but rather a human problem. Low self-esteem can be changed, and it doesn't only belong to Chinese people, so we shan't be too pessimistic about it, and we shan't discriminate against Chinese for it.
Now I'll share an article I found online for you to understand:
Psychologist Alfred Adler: Having low self-esteem could let you have these 4 conditions
Alfred Adler was a famous psychologist, Freud, Jung and Adler are seen as the 3 giants in modern psychology. Adler's works are rather simple and easy for the public to understand. In his famous work What Life Should Mean To You, Adler believes that, humans are born with innate inferiority. Having a sense of inferiority is not a bad thing, but rather a motivation for us to look for superiority and seek success. Only if this kind of inferiority becomes life-burdening, we can see it as a disease.
Personalities are formed in infant period.
Adler believed that the formation of personality starts from being an infant. With that being said, age 4 - 5 is a critical period for personalities to form. In this period of time, if a toddler was influenced by his family or environment mischievously, this could easily led to a lower self-esteem situation in the future. For example, if a kid was simply fed with whatever he wanted in a young age, he could easily enter a state of inferiority in adulthood. Because he paid too much attention on himself, and he was dissociating himself from his community, he lacked basic resolve in overcoming hardships and problems in life.
1. Arrogance is a form of avoidance to inferiority.
Excessive pride in oneself is not being confident. And the reason for such arrogance, is because the person does not think they are good enough deep down, so they form a facade of superiority--in other words, their inferiority has been reversed. Arrogant people avoid facing hardships head-on, avoid facing their own helplessness, so they disguise themselves in excessive pride, but in reality, this is only a cover-up for their own inferiority.
2. Bad temper is a form of covering up inferiority.
Some bad-tempered people are not born with such ill temper, they use their tantrums to relieve their own inferiority. Why are they so bad-tempered? Because they lack patience in dealing with problems. Why don't they have patience? Because they lack the courage in overcoming hardships, they don't think they can do it, they never ever trusted themselves. So bad-tempered people usually have strong inferiority.
3. Jealousy is a product of inferiority.
Admiring someone is a form of inferiority, but admiring others is normal. However, envying someone is a form of severe inferiority. Jealous people always compare their own defects against others' merits, like walking on thin ice. They put too much focus on the good life of others, and they lack reassurance to themselves. Such repression could easily lead to twisted psyche.
4. Show-off is the result of inferiority.
A good amount of inferiority can push you forward. Such motivation let people chase for superiority, and such superiority could produce satisfying emotions. However, excessive demands of superiority becomes a show-off. The essence of show-off is inferiority. So if a person likes to show off, he usually has strong inferiority.
Adler believed, the meaning of misfortune is self-given. You are the determining factor of solving a problem. People who have a strong sense of inferiority rejects themselves too much. So in order to overcome inferiority, we need to improve ourselves.

Let me put in my 2 cents here.
Inferiority is all about the right mindset. What's a right / correct mindset ?
A Truly Good Person should have:
Be honest , kind, courageous, self-aware, wholehearted, passion....... so on and so forth.
Let's be honest, only Saint can achieve all these qualities, average persons like most of us can only acquire certain level of them. Please also notice that the above qualities never mention wealth, which means most ppl can do that without considering money as a factor. It's just a matter of you want to do it or not?
As long as people thinking on the right path, there shouldn't be any space for Inferiority .
( Btw, great article ! )
