“You are not alone, we are here with you”

There was a speech presented by Brandon, an African-American speaker from Teen Truth at my school today. He gave a great presentation.

The presentation started with a video (I cannot find the video, so I'm going to summarize it). It's a short movie that make by a student years ago, it told a conversation that the narrator heard in the hall way at school when he is going to his English class. The narrator heard a white girl talked to an Asian girl about a black man who was cleaning the window, then they called him a "nigger", but at the end of the video, he said, that wasn't a black man, but a disable cleaning the window, and the girls called him a "retard".

Then Brandon talked about his own life, his famliy was poor and he has three siblings. He only have one pair of jeans, but he flips it everyday to make people think he has two pairs. At third grade, in his English class, his teacher asked him what he want to do in the future, Brandon said he wants to help someone like him. The teacher said, you cannot help people if you cannot read. Brandon answered: "But I can talk." Brandon has reading disability, and he did it, he is a speaker now, and gave this great speech. When Brandon was in high school, one day, his elder brother came and said: "Hey, I killed someone." He said that he feels sad because he and his brother spend days and nights together and share almost everything, but now, his brother is going to spend his rest of his life in prison. Also in high school, junior year, one of his teacher met him in the hall way and told him a joke: "The only thing that a person do to change his life is reading", Brandon said in that moment, all the memories came back, he wants to laugh but also cry, because he has reading disability, so he talked to another teacher about it, and that teacher said, you know what, the teacher telling the joke is right, reading is the only thing a person could do to change his life.  Since then, he started to read everything he could find, just to change his own life. Then he said, "I'm the only child in my mom's four children, who lives like what she dreams."

He talked about the pressures, he had pressures just like what he had talked about, we have pressures every day, every time, every moment, the pressure might be going to a good college or university, or getting a better job and have higher salary, but no matter what, we need to beat them, and kick them in butt, and “You are not alone, we are here with you”. A 14-year old girl killed herself a day after jumping from the roof, don’t do that, because “You are not alone, we are here with you”.
