西方的文学体系和其文化内核紧密关联，语言本身不是瓶颈， 瓶颈在于思维和认知水平是不是到了能产生共鸣的阶段。
本人亲身经历，小学三年级的时候，学校暑假作业是读一本名著，我被安排读《唐吉可德》。 可想而知，痛不欲生，强忍着耐心读完了，虽然里面每一个字都能看懂，但是完全不理解作者想要表达什么。
此外想要从小说中获得一些指导性的东西，很难。有这时间还不如读读华尔街时报，经济学人（需要一定学术功底）， 纽约客，Times周刊，不光能学习纯正的书面英语表达，还能完善具有实践价值的知识体系。

虽然我总觉得用对YouTube的参与来衡量一个人的英语水平很不规范，但我还是觉得，你能看懂文艺一点的youtuber，那就够了。至于为什么你发现有生词，这很正常啊，如果你的母语不是这门语言总有这里一点不会的，那里一点不会的，何况作家是比较有文化的人呢？现在我看品葱用户发言也有时要查wiktionary或问我的中国同事。
你可以先想一下一个人汉语文到什么水平才能欣赏红楼梦，反正包维尼的识字量肯定是不够的
遇到不懂的单词，首先通过上下文揣测含义，实在不懂再去翻词典。
这些小说你真的感兴趣吗？学英语就是学英语而已，在初期没有必要非去看经济学人之类的学知识。
想要提高，有兴趣看下去才是关键，千万别勉强自己。
我个人比较喜欢看轻松一些的小说。给你推荐Dial A for Aunties 作者:Jesse Q. Sutanto. 非常畅销的小说，网飞都要把它拍成剧了。还有Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers看起来也比较温馨轻松，简单。
这个作者Jesse Q. 父母是中国人，移民到印尼，但是她本身在新加坡长大，母语是英语。她书里面会出现一些中文词，遣词造句比较简单，有人说比较幼稚，但是绝对还是会碰到生词的。生词不多，学起来才更有效率。

如果本来没有读翻译版文学经典名著的爱好，《双城记》《简爱》之类的，纯纯地只是想提高英文阅读水平，建议还是找一些自己更感兴趣的题材，上面有别的葱油推荐的畅销书就不错。

雅思8分以上至少，算是能读懂英文小说和能去美国电影院看无字幕电影的底线，这些远比在国外上课要难道多，因为有很多生活化的词汇，需要的词汇量巨大，gre单词全部熟悉，20000词汇量差不多。

实在不行先读读珀西杰克逊试试，你能无障碍读那个那杰克伦敦也没啥太大难度了
It depends on the effect you want and the literary degree of the fiction.
In my situation, I just get the B1 level English ability in CEFR test roughly , equals about IELTS 5.0
I read the original English language fiction difficultly, then I abandoned it. Because it’s too many new words to understand the meaning easy.
If you want to understand the meaning of the fiction completely winthout the dictionaries , you need get the CEFR C1 level English ability at least, equals about IELTS 7.5.
But in my opinion, I think the CEFR B2 level or IELTS 6.5 English ability is enough to understand the rough and main meanings of the fiction .
It depends on the literature degree of the fiction especially. Hemingway's novel is certainly easier to understand than Ulysses or Neuromancer, it is more suitable for to start reading.
You can learn the English language with the assistance of the dictionaries while you reading the fiction.

英语词汇和短语太多，多义词太多，生僻词太多。没有20000以上的词汇量，还并不包括短语，一词多义，阅读英文文艺一点的小说可谓是毫无体验。

不要上来就读有点年头的名著。不了解时代背景，就很难get到作者的精妙，比如楼上读堂吉诃德的小朋友。另外从19世纪到现在，英语也是有发展变化的，有些表达方式现在用得少了，非母语者就会很头大。
找高质量的当代流行小说，尤其是被改编成影视剧还口碑不错的那种。教父的小说虽然老一点，但问题不大。Fox前些年的法医剧Bones，原著者是Kathy Reichs。Amazon马上要出第二季的Reacher，原著者是Lee Child。都非常简单容易读，get不到的地方可以回去看看影视剧。
