Believe it or not, the first ever road trip in an automobile happened in 1888 in a Benz Patent-Motorwagen. After Dr. Carl Benz created and refined his vision of the future of transportation, he faced a ton of opposition as many didn't see the invention as a future commercial success. To help quiet the doubters, his wife Bertha Benz went on a secret trip, a publicity tour if you will, to demonstrate the day-to-day reliability of the Motorwagen. After completing the 65-mile journey out to her Mother's house in Pforzheim, she sent a telegram back to Carl, letting him know of the successful journey.
