In Tbilisi, Georgia, special forces used water cannons and teargas against protestors who tried to enter Georgia’s parliament building, on Rustaveli Avenue.
On March 8, for the second night in a row, opponents of a new piece of legislation on “foreign agents,” currently under review by members of parliament, gathered to protest in the city center.
Giorgi Vashadze, leader of a liberal political party in Georgia, demanded that the bill be withdrawn within an hour, and all of the protestors arrested the previous day be released. When the demands weren’t met, he called on protestors to surround the parliament building so that deputies would be unable to enter on Thursday.
After police used force against the protestors, protestors began breaking windows and fences surrounding the parliament building.
Special forces then dispersed the rally and forced protestors to a square near the parliament building.
Georgian lawmakers announced Thursday that they’ve decided to withdraw the draft law “On transparency of foreign influence,” which sparked mass protests earlier this week.
Protests against proposed laws to establish a “foreign agents” registry in Georgia have been going on for multiple days. Two versions of the draft legislation were submitted to parliament. On March 7, lawmakers voted in the first reading to pass a version titled “On transparency of foreign influence,” which would require all non-commercial legal entities and media agencies that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as “foreign agents.” On March 9, parliament planned to vote on the bill’s other version, which would make it possible for any individual or legal entity that receives any funding from abroad to be named an “agent of foreign influence.”
网上流传的图片中有格鲁吉亚市民在城市中涂鸦「Fxxk Russia」,也有市民举牌「NoRussianLaw」和「Never Back to USSR」。
