However, in English context, "bottom line" derives from Finance term, to express the net lose or profit in the financial report. The extended meaning refers to the acceptable lowest price in business deal, the final results/circumstances, the essential point of view etc. having nothing to do with "morality".
Your foreigner acquaintances would have reminded you of such linguistic misuses.
