根據調查，在人類有些族群中，大約有97%到98%的人有狐臭。在歐美國家，有狐臭的人比例高達90%以上，在非洲黑人中，狐臭可占到99%以上。狐臭極少出現在澳洲土著人和薩米人中，占比僅1%到3%。只有在東亞，無狐臭的人才占據優勢，80%的中國人都沒有狐臭，在韓國和日本，這一比例則是99%和70%。歐美和非洲的絕大多數人都有正常的腋臭基因，但是在東亞無腋臭的人群里，腋臭基因的一個鹼基對被替換了，從而造成基因表達異常，大汗腺的分泌受到干擾，沒有蛋白質產生，細菌就沒有分解的原料，自然也就沒有腋臭了。有意思的是，研究還發現這對等位基因同時決定耳垢的類型。攜帶腋臭基因的人耳垢往往是濕的，並且很多，每天都需要掏耳屎，而攜帶無腋臭基因的人，耳垢是乾的，而且很少。因此，西方人常常用棉簽來清除耳朵里油膩膩的耳垢，而東亞的大部分人都免於這樣的煩惱。
