"The defense of individual rights has reached such extremes as to make society as a whole defenseless against certain individuals. It is time, in the West, to defend not so much human rights as human obligations.
On the other hand, destructive and irresponsible freedom has been granted boundless space. Society has turned out to have scarce defense against the abyss of human decadence, for example against the misuse of liberty for moral violence against young people, such as motion pictures full of pornography, crime, and horror. This is all considered to be part of freedom and to be counterbalanced, in theory, by the young people’s right not to look and not to accept. Life organized legalistically has thus shown its inability to defend itself against the corrosion of evil.
......
This tilt of freedom toward evil has come about gradually, but it evidently stems from a humanistic and benevolent concept according to which man—the master of this world—does not bear any evil within himself, and all the defects of life are caused by misguided social systems, which must therefore be corrected."
- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Harvard Commencement Address ("A World Split Apart"), June 8, 1978

Aristotle said that to preserve a democracy, you have to educate the people about the dangers of democracy. Most democracies, though, don't do that. They educate their people in radical democracy until an excess of freedom leads to tyranny.

Even taking into account the possibility that social desirability bias might have increased since the invasion, and could therefore explain part of the rise, I think it's safe to assume that it's pretty clear that Putin's decision enjoys massive support in Russia.

DeSantis broaches repeal of Disney World's special self-governing status in Florida
Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed on Thursday the suggestion of repealing a 55-year-old state law that allows Disney to effectively govern itself on the grounds of Walt Disney World, following the company’s public opposition to a controversial parental rights law in Florida.
"What I would say as a matter of first principle is I don’t support special privileges in law just because a company is powerful and they’ve been able to wield a lot of power," DeSantis said during a press conference in West Palm Beach, Florida on Thursday.
Disney has been engaged in a war of words with Republicans in Florida leading up to Monday’s signing of the controversial bill, which prohibits classroom instruction on "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" with children in third grade or younger "or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

China accused of hacking Ukraine days before Russian invasion
EXCLUSIVE: China staged a huge cyberattack on Ukraine’s military and nuclear facilities in the build-up to Russia’s invasion, according to intelligence memos obtained by The Times
More than 600 websites belonging to the defence ministry in Kyiv and other institutions suffered thousands of hacking attempts which were co-ordinated by the Chinese government, according to Ukraine’s security service, the SBU
In an apparent sign of complicity in the invasion, the spy agency revealed that Chinese attacks started before the end of the Winter Olympics and peaked on February 23, the day before Russian troops and tanks crossed the border
The SBU said China’s attacks sought to infiltrate targets ranging from border defence forces to the national bank and railway authority. They were designed to steal data and explore ways to shut down or disrupt vital defence and civilian infrastructure

President Macron’s Unending Russia Diplomacy
Boris Johnson’s call for tanks a ‘red line’ that Nato won’t cross, says Macron
Macron warns against escalation after Biden's Russia comments
...what possible moral calculus does an American intervention to liberate 25 million people forfeit moral legitimacy because it lacks the blessing of the butchers of Tiananmen Square or the cynics of the Quai d’Orsay?

“Don’t say gay?” When Americans are presented with the actual language of the new Florida law, it wins support by more than a two‐to‐one margin. Voters across partisan lines strongly support the new Florida law after being provided with the actual language of the bill: “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in Kindergarten through third grade or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”
“Don’t Say Gay” Bill Support‐Oppose
Overall 61%‐26%
Republican Voters 70%‐23%
Independent Voters 58%‐26%
Democratic Voters 55%‐29%
Trump 2020 Voters 70%‐23%
Biden 2020 Voters 53%‐30%
Parents 67%‐24%
Suburban Voters 60%‐30%
Know Someone LGBTQ 61%‐28%
Fully two‐thirds of voters believe it is inappropriate for teachers or school personnel to discuss gender identity with children in kindergarten through 3rd Grade. By a 67%‐21% margin, Americans say the discussion of gender identity is inappropriate for children in kindergarten through 3rd Grade, including 88% of Republicans, 68% of Independent voters, and a plurality of Democrats (47%).
Fewer than 10% of Americans want to see gender removed from birth certificates. While just 8% of Americans believe states should remove gender from birth certificates, fully 79% of voters do NOT, including 93% of Republicans, 79% of Independent voters, and 67% of Democrats.
Finally, by more than a two‐to‐one margin, Americans believe transgender athletes should play on sports teams that match their birth gender. By a 60%‐24% margin, voters believe “transgender athletes should only be allowed to play on sports teams that match their birth gender.” While Republican (85%‐7%) and Independent voters (60%‐23%) largely agree, Democratic voters aren’t as sure (39%‐36%).

Analysis: Cost of living woes boost "phoenix" Le Pen in race for French presidency
PARIS, March 30 (Reuters) - For a far-right challenger whose past presidential campaigns have centred on pugnacious anti-immigration, eurosceptic rhetoric, Marine Le Pen has a new message for voters and it is working: I'll put money back in your pockets.
Le Pen has tapped into discontent over the rising cost of living as inflation hits multi-year highs after Russia invaded. Her climb in opinion polls less than a fortnight ahead of the vote is causing unease in President Emmanuel Macron's camp.
Le Pen was viewed by some political observers as finished after her thumping defeat to Macron in 2017's runoff vote, but has softened her image since then, ditching unpopular plans to drop the euro, tweeting about her passion for cats, and on one occasion taking selfies with a veiled Muslim girl.
While migration and security remain central to her manifesto, a Reuters analysis shows mentions of "purchasing power" in her tweets have sharply increased since early 2022, displacing "immigration" to which she now makes far fewer references on the social media platform.

A lesson there for the GOP, if we are willing to learn it.

To make sense of reality。

But friend, we come too late. It's true that the gods live,
But up over our heads, up in a different world.
They function endlessly up there, and seem to care little
If we live or die, so much do they avoid us.
A weak vessel cannot hold them forever; humans can
Endure the fullness of the gods only at times. Therefore
Life itself becomes a dream about them. But perplexity
And sleep assist us: distress and night-time strengthen,
Until enough heroes have grown in the bronze cradle,
With hearts as strong as the gods', as it used to be.
Thundering they arise. Meanwhile I often think it is
Better to stay asleep, than to exist without companions,
Just waiting it out, not knowing what to do or say
In the meantime. What use are poets in times of need?
But you'll say they're like holy priests of the wine god,
Moving from land to land in the holy night.
- "Bread and Wine", 7th stanza, by Friedrich Hölderlin

Le Pen led Hollande in some polls but Hollande was also way more unpopular than Macron, who currently has better approvals than he's had for most of his presidency
Le Pen only leads by a point in one poll though while Hollande's worst match-up with Le Pen put him behind by 8
Still, it's a close race. A lot of people were pretty dismissive of the idea that Le Pen could win because Macron's approval ratings looked strong in comparison to past presidents
Le Pen's numbers are rising as well but it's a reminder that "relatively popular" can still mean you're not that popular. 44% approval is still 44% approval, even if the last guy had 4%

The EU and French government forgot one crucial point: to open oneself to the outside, you must have a solid core; to welcome, you have to remain; and to share, you must have something to offer. Without nation, and without family, the limits of the common good, natural law and collective morality disappears, as the reign of egoism continues.

With Macron and Le Pen Leading Election Field, a Fractured France Decides
...immigration, security and a sharply rising cost of living have coalesced into an ugly brew. Many French people feel left out from the economic growth Mr. Macron has delivered to the country and anxious about the violence they see in their neighborhoods.
Referring to several Islamist terrorist attacks in France, Irène Fornal, a retired state pension fund director ensconced at Dijon’s Café de l’Industrie, said, “After Charlie Hebdo, after Bataclan, after the murder of Samuel Paty, evil was personified by the immigrant stranger, and the country split.”
Dijon, like many towns in France, has its projects, underprivileged areas of nondescript high-rises where immigrants, often Muslims from North Africa, and their descendants predominate, and the drug trade brings violence between rival gangs.
“Insecurity pollutes the life of people,” said François Rebsamen, the city’s longtime mayor and a lifetime Socialist who has joined the Macron campaign, given his own party’s collapse. “In these areas, tranquillity is elusive.”
Two years ago, in the Les Grésilles neighborhood of Dijon, street battles between Chechens and North Africans erupted over five days after a 16-year-old Chechen boy was assaulted by drug dealers from the Maghreb. In another depressed area, called Fontaine d’Ouche, some stores are still boarded up after drive-by shootings late last year.
...
A Moroccan woman named Hafida El-Bakkouri, wearing a head scarf, joined a group of women playing a version of dominoes. She said she buys a bag of flour for 50 cents in order to bake three baguettes for about the price of one at the bakery. “We get by,” she said.
When asked how she felt about Ms. Le Pen, who has vowed to ban the use of head scarves in public and fine women who wear them, Ms. El-Bakkouri said: “The main thing is she wants to send delinquents out of the country. I may vote for her. Why not?”

Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky says 'Big Israel' a model for post-war Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cited the concept of a "big Israel" as a model for a post-war Ukraine, as the country continues to struggle under the Russian invasion.
Speaking during a briefing to media on Tuesday, the Ukrainian president warned that Ukrainian society would have to behave under a stage of siege even after the end of the conflict with Russia.
“Ukraine will definitely not be what we wanted it to be from the beginning. It is impossible. Absolutely liberal, European – it will not be like that," he said.
"We will become a ‘big Israel’ with its own face. We will not be surprised if we have representatives of the Armed Forces or the National Guard in cinemas, supermarkets, and people with weapons. I am confident that the question of security will be the issue number one for the next ten years. I am sure of it.”
Despite this, he said the country would not become “an authoritarian state", which he said was "impossible" in Ukraine.
“An authoritarian state would lose to Russia. People know what they are fighting for,” he said.

Pécresse will not urge voters to pick Macron in final round
French right-wing candidate Valérie Pécresse said on Friday (8 April) she will not tell voters who to pick in the second round of the presidential election should she fail to make it past the first one on Sunday (10 April) – a surprising move for a party that has always urged voters to block the far-right. EURACTIV France reports.
Pécresse is currently polling at 9% in fourth place, tied with far-right candidate Eric Zemmour and behind French President Emmanuel Macron, far-right candidate Marine Le Pen and radical-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, respectively polling at 26%, 23% and 17%.
Pécresse said that she “will not give any voting instructions” in case of defeat in the first election round on broadcaster France Inter on Friday in response to a question from a caller.
“The French are free, they are the ones who vote”, said the conservative-right candidate, adding that they “do not want any instructions”.
This marks a first for Pécresse’s right-wing Les Républicains party which has always called on its voters to vote against the far-right contender in the second round.
What used to be called the ‘Republican Front’ seems to be crumbling, according to the analysis of a former right-wing politician, who wishes to remain anonymous, and who has held prominent positions in a major French city.

Russia's war against Ukraine will end with the break-up of the Russian Federation. It will be replaced by small, demilitarized and powerless republics with neutrality written into their constitutions.

The breakup of the USSR mainly had no incidents because there was a successor state - Russia - who handled everything. You are proposing a complete breakup and dismantling. The consequences are impossible to foresee and would most likely lead to a lot of chaos.

As one of the few who was critical of the Germans & their energy dependency on the Russians long before it was fashionable here, it is amazing to see blue chekists here - who had lauded Merkel - now pretending to be critical of long established German, indeed European, policy
At the same time, the Germans are the 'human shield' for most Europeans, who want business as usual restored with Russia as soon as is reasonably possible, especially cheap energy. The further you are from the continent's Russian frontier, the less you care about Ukraine.
All of the Europeans who really want a confrontation with Russia are here tweeting away - in English! - on Twitter. Europe is an old place full of people whose ancestors were survivors and who care only as much as they have to do so about 'the current thing'.
This is in stark contrast to the Anglo-Americans who (fresh off the disaster in Kabul) want to fight the Russians to the last Ukrainian ... this war is a chance for a certain Boomer demo, once important, to re-live 1985 & pretend the Soviets may be breaching the Fulda Gap...
There are two contradictory adults in the European debate: one is the Poles, who the Americans have neglected in favour of Berlin, and the other is the French, who have the least dependency on the Russians but whose leader, Macron, sees clearly the disaster of the war continuing.
But as for the Germans, whatever their many opportunistic faults wrapped in Merkelesque sanctimony, the idea there is a widespread European appetite for the war to continue into the northern Summer is sheer fantasy. I suspect the Ukrainian leadership knows this, too.

Good news:
Trump endorses J.D. Vance, wading into Ohio's contentious Republican Senate primary
Former President Donald Trump has waded into the crowded and contentious Republican Senate primary in Ohio to offer an endorsement with just over two weeks until the election.
Trump on Friday backed J.D. Vance, a venture capitalist-turned-Midwest memoirist, whose best-selling Hillbilly Elegy launched his career as a conservative media commentator.
The GOP contest has several candidates who have touted their allegiances to Trump, but the former president said in a statement that, "In the Great State of Ohio, the candidate most qualified and ready to win in November is J.D. Vance."
The endorsement comes ahead of a Trump rally in Ohio next weekend.

Ukraine is scanning faces of dead Russians, then contacting the mothers
Ukrainian officials say the use of facial recognition software could help end the brutal war. But some experts call it ‘classic psychological warfare’ that sets a gruesome precedent.
Ukrainian officials have run more than 8,600 facial recognition searches on dead or captured Russian soldiers in the 50 days since Moscow’s invasion began, using the scans to identify bodies and contact hundreds of their families in what may be one of the most gruesome applications of the technology to date.
The country’s IT Army, a volunteer force of hackers and activists that takes its direction from the Ukrainian government, says it has used those identifications to inform the families of the deaths of 582 Russians, including by sending them photos of the abandoned corpses.
...
The West’s solidarity with Ukraine makes it tempting to support such a radical act designed to capitalize on family grief, said Stephanie Hare, a surveillance researcher in London. But contacting soldiers’ parents, she said, is “classic psychological warfare” and could set a dangerous new standard for future conflicts.
“If it were Russian soldiers doing this with Ukrainian mothers, we might say, ‘Oh, my God, that’s barbaric,’ ” she said. “And is it actually working? Or is it making them say: ‘Look at these lawless, cruel Ukrainians, doing this to our boys?’ ”
...
In another conversation, a stranger sent a message to a Russian mother saying her son was dead, alongside a photo showing a man’s body in the dirt — face grimacing and mouth agape. The recipient responded with disbelief, saying it wasn’t him, before the sender passed along another photo showing a gloved hand holding the man’s military documents.
“Why are you doing this?” the recipient wrote back. “Do you want me to die? I already don’t live. You must be enjoying this.”

The gory online campaign Ukraine hopes will sow anti-Putin dissent probably violates the Geneva Conventions
The Ukrainian government has posted grisly photos and videos of killed and captured Russian soldiers in hopes of undermining the Kremlin’s onslaught. But military-justice experts argue the campaign violates international law.
A besieged Ukraine has adopted a gruesome tactic in hopes of stoking anti-government rage inside Russia: posting photos and videos of captured and killed Russian soldiers on the Web for anyone to see.
On Telegram, Twitter and YouTube, Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs since Sunday has posted a constant stream of extremely graphic images showcasing the horrors of war and inviting Russians to examine them to determine whether the images feature a missing loved one.
In many of the images, soldiers’ corpses can be seen burned, ripped apart, mangled in wreckage or abandoned in snow; in some, their faces are featured in bloody close-ups, frozen in pain.

But the tactic also could be interpreted as a violation of the Geneva Conventions, which say governments must “at all times” protect prisoners of war from “insults and public curiosity.”
Such violations might seem minor compared with evidence suggesting Russian military forces have killed civilians and indiscriminately bombed residential neighborhoods, said Rachel E. VanLandingham, a professor at Southwestern Law School who has studied war crimes. But they could chip away at Ukraine’s ability to hold Russia accountable for violating international law.
“The law doesn’t allow for, ‘They’re doing bad things, so we can, too,’” VanLandingham said. “They don’t want to turn the international community against them. They’ve got to be on the straight and narrow here. It’s really dangerous for them in desperation to do things that are clearly prohibited.”

A few thoughts:
1) Putin can use nukes;
2) Putin wanted to celebrate a Victory parade in Kyiv;
3) The moment he realizes there will be no victory, he will want to nuke Kyiv
4) This scenario is realistic but may not stop the world from fighting Russia;
5) because he has nukes anyway and will always blackmail us with his nukes;
6) so the most secure way to get guaranteed peace is to eliminate nuclear Russia. Some nukes can explode, but they will explode anyway. Our object is to minimize their number + to make Russia nuclear-free
7) there are no best scenarios now. Every scenario is risky. But the one as we try to find a compromise- is the worst one, as this allows Putin to hit the world in the worst way.
8) So no peace with Russia, we must hit it hard and decisive and forever;
9) END

Haughty eyes and a proud heart— the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
「码头苦力哲学家(The Longshoreman Philosopher)」Eric Hoffer:
- When people are bored, it is primarily with their own selves that they are bored.
- The compulsion to take ourselves seriously is in inverse proportion to our creative capacity. When the creative flow dries up, all we have left is our importance.
- The less justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready he is to claim all excellence for his nation, his religion, his race or his holy cause... A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding; when it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business.
Ouch! Ouch!! Ouch!!!

University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax — known for her history of racist remarks — said Black and Asian people are resentful toward “Western peoples’ outsized achievements” on a recent segment of Tucker Carlson’s Fox Nation show.
Referring to Indian Americans, Wax said April 8 on “Tucker Carlson Today”: “They climb the ladder, they get the best education, we give them every opportunity, and they turn around and lead the charge on ‘we’re racist, we’re an awful country.’ On some level, their country is a s--thole.”
Wax, who attended Columbia Law School and has taught at Penn since 2001, previously drew national attention when she said the U.S. would be “better off with fewer Asians.”
The executive director of the South Asian civic organization Indian American Impact, Neil Makhija, a lecturer at Penn Law, said Wax’s overtly racist talking points have led him to doubt his colleague’s capacity to teach students of all races.
“The most unfortunate thing is that we have a lot of brilliant and incredible students at the law school,” he said. “It makes you question whether she can fairly grade or educate.”

Well, once an empire, always an empire. Made my guess based on Sultan Erdogan's behaviour in recent years.

Same pattern repeating itself all over the democratic world: the liberal-left claims it represents the poor, the working class and the downtrodden while their chances for victory overwhelmingly rely on the affluent urban/suburban professional class. That's how Biden won:

NYT: "Le Pen won by a comfortable margin in the first round in places that have lost jobs to deindustrialization," where she denounced Macron's neoliberal "reforms."
The liberal-left doesn't want to grapple with why is happening, so they just call disobedient workers racist."
That above quote on Le Pen winning in the places most devastated by job loss and deindustrialization (where Trump and Brexit also thrived) is from this NYT article, on how Macron is now pretending to soften his neoliberal pro-banker/anti-worker policies:

I think we need to rethink Russia's war against Ukraine.
Russia itself says that it is not a war against Ukraine, but against NATO (Simonyan & Solovyev on Rossia 1).
OK, Russia has declared war on NATO, and that is NATO doing? Nothing! Think again!
Anders Åslund @anders_aslund
My humble advice to NATO would be:
1. Give all the arms you can asap to Ukraine.
2. Open the Black Sea ports of Ukraine for normal shipping.
3. Bomb relevant Russian cities preventively to make sure that Putin does not use chemical arms or nukes.

With Trump gone, Republicans look to weaken his China tariffs
Congressional Republicans continue to talk tough about confronting China economically, echoing the populist rhetoric of former President Donald Trump. But with Trump and the political cover he provided gone from Washington, GOP senators are turning away from some of the most restrictive China trade policies his administration instituted.
Exhibit A: Republicans are balking at the protectionist trade provisions included in House legislation to help the U.S. economy compete with China, which passed the lower chamber with only one GOP vote.
Instead, Republicans are pushing to approve the Senate version of the legislation, which would roll back some of Trump’s tariffs on China — something the Biden administration has been reluctant to do. And they’re threatening to pull their support for the legislation entirely if certain House trade proposals are approved by the conference committee currently negotiating the final text. Given that the final legislation will ultimately need GOP votes to get through the Senate, that gives the more traditional, pro-trade wing of the party the upper hand in the negotiations — bucking protectionist impulses that have been on the rise in both parties in recent years.
The cross-chamber showdown demonstrates how many Republicans, no longer in Trump’s shadow, are joining Senate Democrats in trying to unwind some of the last administration’s most protectionist trade policies. Only three Republicans voted against the trade provisions in the Senate bill during the floor debate last year — Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Tom Cotton (Ark.) and Josh Hawley (Mo.) — and none of them were named to the conference committee that will reconcile the two bills.

Finland’s Bible tweet trial should trouble us all
Is it a criminal offence to quote from the Bible? Finland’s former home secretary Päivi Räsänen found herself in hot water when she did just that. 'How does the doctrinal foundation of the Church fit in with shame and sin being raised as a matter of pride?' she asked. Räsänen's objection – which came after the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland partnered with a Helsinki Pride festival in 2019 – led to her being charged with incitement against a minority group. Finally this week, after a three-year legal battle, Räsänen has been cleared. Her ordeal offers a troubling case study of the way in which ‘hate speech’ legislation is being used as a modern blasphemy law.

Exxon Bans LGBTQ Pride and BLM Flags, Triggering Employee Backlash
Exxon Mobil Corp. plans to prohibit the LGBTQ-rights flag from being flown outside its offices during Pride month in June, prompting backlash from Houston-based employees.
Exxon updated company guidance on what flags can be displayed outside its offices, banning “external position flags” such as PRIDE and Black Lives Matter, according to the policy seen by Bloomberg News. In response, members of Exxon’s PRIDE Houston Chapter are refusing to represent the company at the city’s June 25 Pride celebration, according to an employee group email also seen by Bloomberg.
“Corporate leadership took exception to a rainbow flag being flown at our facilities” last year, Exxon’s PRIDE Houston employee group wrote in the email Thursday. “PRIDE was informed the justification was centered on the need for the corporation to maintain ‘neutrality.’”
The dispute comes as employees, investors and customers increasingly push America’s biggest corporations to take stances on social issues such as LGBTQ rights, racial equality and abortion. Walt Disney Co. last month decided to publicly oppose legislation promoted by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, prompting lawmakers to move to strip the entertainment giant of special self-governance privileges.
