"The defense of individual rights has reached such extremes as to make society as a whole defenseless against certain individuals. It is time, in the West, to defend not so much human rights as human obligations.

On the other hand, destructive and irresponsible freedom has been granted boundless space. Society has turned out to have scarce defense against the abyss of human decadence, for example against the misuse of liberty for moral violence against young people, such as motion pictures full of pornography, crime, and horror. This is all considered to be part of freedom and to be counterbalanced, in theory, by the young people’s right not to look and not to accept. Life organized legalistically has thus shown its inability to defend itself against the corrosion of evil.
......

This tilt of freedom toward evil has come about gradually, but it evidently stems from a humanistic and benevolent concept according to which man—the master of this world—does not bear any evil within himself, and all the defects of life are caused by misguided social systems, which must therefore be corrected."

Ted Cruz

If Putin wins in Ukraine, it will confirm for Xi that he can confidently invade Taiwan, seizing control of the global supply of semiconductors. The results would be catastrophic for U.S. supply chains and the price of each and every product Americans purchase.

If China were to conquer Taiwan, it would give the Chinese Communist Party a stranglehold on the global supply of semiconductors.

Sen. John Kennedy

It is clear to me that Putin is working with President Xi in China and is working with the Ayatollah in Iran, and this is their goal: Their goal is to have Russia win in Ukraine, so Russia can dominate central and eastern Europe. Their goal is to have President Xi dominate the Indo-Pacific and become free to make moves in Africa and South America.

State Farm Launches Program to Distribute LGBTQ Books to Kindergartners

State Farm, the household name insurance company, has launched a program that would enlist hundreds of staff volunteers across the country to distribute LGBTQ-themed books to teachers, community centers, and libraries, explicitly targeting children as young as kindergartners.

In collaboration with the GenderCool Project, State Farm aims to “help diversify classroom, community center and library bookshelves with a collection of books to help bring clarity and understanding to the national conversation about Being Transgender, Inclusive and Non-Binary,” an employee whistleblower email obtained by Consumers’ Research, dated January 18, 2022, reveals.

“The project’s goal is to increase representation of LGBTQ+ books and support out communities in having challenging, important and empowering conversations with children Age 5+,” the email from Jose Soto, State Farm’s Corporate Responsibility Analyst, to all Florida agents reads.

President Of One Of World’s Biggest Companies Brags About Developing Tech That Can Monitor Where You Travel, What You Eat

The president of Alibaba Group, a Chinese multinational technology company, bragged Tuesday about developing technology which would monitor the “carbon footprint” of consumers.

“We’re developing through technology an ability for consumers to measure their own carbon footprint,” Alibaba Group president J. Michael Evans said at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Annual Summit in Davos, Switzerland.

“What does that mean?” Evans continued. “That’s where are they traveling, how are they traveling, what are they eating, what are they consuming on the platform?”

Evans described the technology as, “an individual carbon footprint tracker.”

Why farming in UK is predominantly white - and what's being done to increase diversity

Analysis by Sky News finds that 97.2% of workers in agricultural, forestry and fishing are white, excluding seasonal workers, making it the least diverse job sector in the country.

The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) is launching a new scholarship scheme to encourage more British students from ethnic minorities to enter the farming sector.

The RAU, one of the leading agricultural institutions in the UK, hopes the two undergraduate scholarships will increase diversity and equality in the industry - which is predominately made up of white workers.

Mass shooting

Number of mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and May 2022

Number of victims of mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and May 2022

W. Bradford Wilcox: Sons of divorce, school shooters

...The social scientific evidence about the connection between violence and broken homes could not be clearer. My own research suggests that boys living in single mother homes are almost twice as likely to end up delinquent compared to boys who enjoy good relationships with their father. Harvard sociologist Robert Sampson has written that “Family structure is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, predictor of variations in urban violence across cities in the United States.” His views are echoed by the eminent criminologists Michael Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi, who have written that “such family measures as the percentage of the population divorced, the percentage of households headed by women, and the percentage of unattached individuals in the community are among the most powerful predictors of crime rates.”

Why is fatherlessness such a big deal for our boys (almost all of these incidents involve boys)? Putting the argument positively, sociologist David Popenoe notes that “fathers are important to their sons as role models. They are important for maintaining authority and discipline. And they are important in helping their sons to develop both self-control and feelings of empathy toward others, character traits that are found to be lacking in violent youth.” Boys, then, who did not grow up with an engaged, attentive, and firm father are more vulnerable to getting swept up in the Sturm und Drang of adolescence and young adulthood, and in the worst possible way.
School Shooters: The Myth of the Stable Home

Compiled by Peter Langman, Ph.D

One misconception regarding school shooters is that they typically come from stable,
intact, middle- to upper-middle-class families, e.g., from “good homes.” Though this is
true of some perpetrators, it is not true of many of them. This document presents information on the families of some school shooters in the United States. This is far from being a complete list, including only those for whom there is information regarding their childhoods, though even this is sometimes minimal. They are listed in chronological order.

The concept of “stable, intact, middle-class families” is difficult to define. For my purposes, “stable” and “intact” refer to how functional the families were, regardless of whether
or not the parents’ marriage (if they had one) was legally intact.
...

Indicators of broken homes, instability, or dysfunction include parental absence, separation, divorce, infidelity, parental alcoholism or drug addiction, criminal behavior, domestic
violence, and child abuse. Economic status is often hard to determine but some details are
provided.
...

Out of this sample of 56 school shooters, only 10 (18%) grew up in a stable home with
both biological parents. In other words, 82% of the sample either grew up in dysfunctional
families or without their parents together (for at least part of their lives).

Solidarity, if still a thing, will always on a daily basis call for action from the 'Leader' who cherishes it and who is now really NOT fit for the job as everybody else already has made clear to themselves.

------------------------------------

Moldova's pro-Russian former president Dodon detained, says he is innocent

Mr. Dodon 宣称 "Dear citizens, I want to assure you that for every element of interest to the prosecutors I have the necessary explanations that remove any suspicion of corruption or breaking the law,"    "This politically-motivated case is fabricated."

Dodon's arrest comes at a time when relations between Moscow and Chisinau are increasingly strained.

Why Colombia’s Election Has Voters Looking Left

Progressives love to say things like “diversity is our strength” and “race isn’t real,” but they’ll also tell you that Europeans destroyed the third world by drawing national borders without regard for tribal, ethnic, and religious divides.

One of the many holy mysteries of progressivism.

If democracy failed in Africa and the Middle East (despite the modern institutions that colonialists brought) because the borders don’t reflect an actual “tribe”, then what is the future of the West?

‘We’re barely afloat’: Alarming comments by Ukrainian officials suggest problems for Kyiv in the Donbas, where Russian troops seek a ‘new Mariupol’

...Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the situation at the frontlines in the Donbas is dire. “Bakhmut, Popasna, Severodonetsk — it’s in these directions that the occupiers have concentrated their efforts. They’re slaughtering people there and trying to destroy all life. No one has ever caused so much damage to the Donbas as Russian soldiers are inflicting right now,” Zelensky said, summarizing the 89th day of the war. “Russia has effectively thrown the entire remaining might of its army at this offensive,” he added, the next day.

Presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych has described the course of the war even more grimly, warning that the Russian military has outpaced Ukraine’s Armed Forces. “The Russian side managed to build up its reserves sooner,” he told Mark Feygin in a YouTube broadcast on May 25, detailing Russia’s apparent plans to create “a new Mariupol” by encircling Ukraine’s troops in the Donbas:

...So, there’s a little ‘pocket’ forming, which Yampil, Siversk, Popasna, Vrubivka… And they’re closing it, and Lysychansk and Severodonetsk remain surrounded. That’s their main goal right now — to create a ‘new Mariupol.’

Continuous artillery and air strikes, almost nonstop ground attacks by the enemy. They have superiority in artillery and aviation. To put it mildly, we’re barely afloat.

In addition to the encirclement of the Donbas, Arestovych also predicts that Russia will increase its pressure along the Kherson-Zaporizhia line, north of Crimea. Further north, Russia could even mount another assault on Kyiv itself. Vadim Skibitsky, the spokesman for Ukraine’s Intelligence Main Directorate, has corroborated these concerns, saying that Russia is moving troops from Crimea to the Kherson region and occupied parts of Zaporizhia. “They’re preparing the necessary engineering structures and planning not just one or two but three lines of defense. It’s these military indicators that suggest Russia’s intentions to seize and hold these territories,” explained Skibitsky.

In an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda, the commander of Ukraine’s “Svoboda” volunteer battalion, Petro Kuzyk, said Russian troops likely plan to capture Severodonetsk by the same means they used to take the city of Rubizhne in mid-May, essentially by wiping it off the face of the Earth with a constant barrage of artillery. “On average,” explained Kuzyk, “they fire between 20 and 50 shots for every one of our shells”:

“They hammer our positions with artillery, and their infantry advances under artillery cover, sometimes together with tanks. As a rule, their infantry suffers losses, retreats, and then the artillery goes back to work, before another two or three infantry assaults.

“Using these massive artillery bombardments, the Russians are able to advance, since they are destroying our positions, our trenches, and our buildings, step by step… And they’re under orders to level Ukrainian cities.”

Unlikely that Ukraine will become a candidate for EU membership: Dutch PM

The chance that Ukraine will soon become a candidate for European Union membership is not very great, Prime Minister Mark Rutte thinks. Too many countries in the EU don't like the idea. That would also be unfair to countries in the Western Balkans that have been waiting much longer for candidate membership, he said in parliament.

The European Commission must first respond to the Kyiv government's request to become a candidate for membership. Then the heads of government decide on whether this should happen.

One possibility is that Ukraine becomes a potential candidate member and is told how many steps it still needs to take to obtain this status, Rutte said. That happened before with Bosnia. It will also help ensure that the Ukrainian government is "not demotivated," Rutte said.
Germany’s anti-war intellectuals are resurfacing

...Within days of the Russian invasion chancellor Scholz declared to ramp up defence spending above 2% of GDP and dedicating an additional 100bn euros to the German armed forces.

But in recent weeks, some of Germany’s leading intellectuals are coming out of the woodwork to voice their unease about their country’s involvement in Ukraine.

In early May, a group of German academics published an open letter asking the German government to reconsider supplying Ukraine with heavy weapons, which gathered over 285,000 signatures (by contrast, a rival letter demanding unconditional support for Ukraine attracted a just 71,000 signatures). And thanks to support from Martin Walser and Jürgen Habermas, the anti-war faction has two of Germany’s most important intellectuals on their side. The latter has been particularly unsparing in his critique of those who demand more support for Ukraine. They are shrill and engage in moral blackmailing, Habermas argues, sabotaging the cautious course of chancellor Scholz.
...

...Not seeing a defeat of Russia as a realistic possibility, for many German intellectuals the current level of support for Ukraine is foolhardy.

Attitudes towards President Zelenskyy are changing as well. An Austrian magazine recently published a cover story that was widely shared in Germany claiming that Zelenskyy is a “lying and deceiving to fill an inner emptiness driven by the psychological trauma of having Jewish ancestors” while Putin “feels misunderstood.” In its current print edition, the German newspaper “Süddeutsche Zeitung” published a cartoon that depicts an oversized Zelenskyy looming over the World Economic Forum in Davos, playing with antisemitic stereotypes. These stories reflect a broader sentiment in the country: a majority of Germans have made clear, for example, that they would not support an energy embargo against Russia.

https://twitter.com/kaitlancollins/status/1531292296741892098

We need a real debate about the Ukraine war

...Shouldn’t the ramifications, perils and multifaceted costs of this proxy war be a central topic of media coverage — as well as informed analysis, discussion and debate? Yet what we have in the media and political establishment is, for the most part, a one-sided, even nonexistent, public discussion and debate. It’s as if we live with what journalist Matt Taibbi has dubbed an “intellectual no-fly zone.”
...

In our fragile democracy, the cost of dissent is comparatively low. Why, then, aren’t more individuals at think tanks or in academia, media or politics challenging the orthodox U.S. political-media narrative? Is it not worth asking whether sending ever-more weapons to the Ukrainians is the wisest course? Is it too much to ask for more questioning and discussion about how best to diminish the danger of nuclear conflict? Why are nonconformists smeared for noting, even bolstered with reputable facts and history, the role of nationalist, far-right and, yes, neo-Nazi forces in Ukraine? Fascist or neo-Nazi revivalism is a toxic factor in many countries today, from European nations to the United States. Why is Ukraine’s history too often ignored, even denied?

The Defense Industry’s Ukraine Pundits

...Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, cable news networks have routinely called on defense officials-turned-consultants to offer analysis and help the American public make sense of the crisis. Often, these analysts have used their TV time to call for greater U.S. involvement and bolder moves that could ratchet up tensions between two nuclear-armed superpowers.

The networks have consistently failed to disclose these analysts’ day jobs, describing them instead by only their former high-ranking military or government roles — leaving viewers in the dark about the analysts’ financial ties to defense contractors that stand to profit from increased or prolonged conflict.
...

The phenomenon is not new. In an analysis of three weeks of news coverage following last year’s U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) found that 20 of the 22 featured guests from the U.S. on the networks’ Sunday shows had ties to the military-industrial-complex. At that point, too, the TV networks regularly neglected to disclose their guests’ ties to the defense industry. But the stakes are now much higher: Military conflict between the U.S. and Russia could make for a world-ending disaster, which is why the Biden administration has been reluctant to take major actions that could be perceived as escalatory.

But the Ukraine crisis and the potential for greater conflict have been a goldmine for defense contractors, sending stocks skyrocketing and prompting sharp increases in defense spending.
Negative views of Russia mainly limited to western liberal democracies, poll shows

The sharp polarisation between mainly western liberal democracies and the rest of the world in perceptions of Russia has been laid bare in an annual global poll of attitudes towards democracy.

Within Europe, 55% of those surveyed for the Alliance of Democracies said they were in favour of cutting economic ties with Russia due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, whereas in Asia there was a majority against, and in Latin America opinion was evenly split.

Negative views of Russia are largely confined to Europe and other liberal democracies. Positive views of Russia have been retained in China, Indonesia, Egypt, Vietnam, Algeria, Morocco, Malaysia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
...

The countries with a widely held most negative view of Russia included Poland (net negative 87%), Ukraine (80%), Portugal (79%), Italy (65%), UK (65%), Sweden (77%), US (62%) and Germany (62%). Even in Hungary – whose leader Viktor Orbán is an ally of Putin – a net 32% have a negative view of Russia. In Venezuela, often seen as propped up by Russia, the local population has a net negative view of Russia of 36%.

Countries with a net positive view of Russia included India (36%) Indonesia (14%), Saudi Arabia (11 %), Algeria (29%), Morocco (4%), and Egypt (7%).

Despite the mixed views about Russia, strong sympathy was shown for Ukraine.

1/3 In a healthy society, what is idealized for men is becoming a husband and father (which most young men can achieve) rather than wealth, power and fame (which most cannot). Idealizing the latter yields a cartoon masculinity, sets men up for frustration, and chaos is the sequel

2/3 Feminism takes this self-aggrandizing model of masculinity and insists that women pursue it too. Gender theory comes along and melts away any residual natural, visceral understanding of what genuine masculinity and femininity entail

3/3 Alienated from their natures, men and women are miserable. The family decays, pathologies ramify throughout the social fabric. But like the gambler who thinks the problem is that he hasn’t spent enough, ideologues only push the envelope further. More:

Sergey Radchenko @DrRadchenko

Our debate on Ukraine lacks nuance. When people say that the war must be fought until Putin is defeated, they are generally unable to say what they mean by this. There are different possibilities:

1. Russia is pushed back to the lines of 23/2.
2. Russia is pushed out of Donbas.
3. Russia is pushed out of Donbas & Crimea.
4. Fringe fantasies like breaking up Russia etc.

It should be said that at the moment we are nowhere close to No 1. Getting to this point is no minor task, and will of course amount to a massive Ukrainian victory and a humiliation for Russia. It could perhaps also prove a starting point for negotiations, as Zelensky has argued.

But we should also consider other possibilities: 1) That Russia continues to consolidate its position in Donbas, and potentially renews its efforts elsewhere or 2) The fighting in Donbas will stall, as both sides dig in.

What the West should do under these circumstances is an interesting question for discussion. We rarely hear these issues discussed (or if they are, they are drowned in the brave but vague and analytically deficient rhetoric about defeating Putin).

No answers offered here. I am just posing questions. I do this in this Spectator piece, citing Kissinger.

Azov Battalion drops neo-Nazi symbol exploited by Russian propagandists (The Times)

...Created in 2014 as a paramilitary organisation to fight pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Donbas region, the Azov Battalion first attracted far-right volunteers harbouring anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish views.

This background has been used by the Kremlin to justify its assertion that Ukraine needed “de-nazifying”.

Now incorporated into the national guard, the regiment has attracted fighters from a diverse range of backgrounds. It has played a decisive role in key battles in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Mariupol as part of the nationwide resistance effort.

In March, President Zelensky, who is Jewish, awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to an Azov commander.

The Kremlin’s use of the Azov Battalion as a pretext for invasion is undermined by the presence of neo-Nazi divisions within its own ranks.

Ukraine's 'unicorn' LGBTQ soldiers head for war (Reuters)

At their home in Kyiv, Ukrainian volunteer fighters Oleksandr Zhuhan and Antonina Romanova pack for a return to active duty.

Their uniform bares a rare distinction - the image of a unicorn sewn into its standard-issue epaulets, just below the national flag - a symbol of their status as an LGBTQ couple who are Ukrainian soldiers.

The pair would not describe themselves as LGBTQ activists, but they are both open about their sexuality - Romanova identifies as non-binary and uses she/her pronouns.

Zuhan says the mythical beast carries an important message for LGBTQ soldiers.

“It dates back to 2014 when Russian war started, and lots of people just said there are no gay people in the army. And so the LGBTQ community chose the unicorn because it is like a fantastic non-existent creature and so it became the symbol of LGBTQ people in the army.”

Martyr Made @martyrmade

Media figures, local officials, and Democratic Party activists were on weekly calls discussing how to put the riots to political use. The DOD was going around the executive declaring it would not intervene to stop the carnage, daring Trump to intervene. Textbook color revolution.

This really must be remembered as a true watershed moment in American political history. The combined force of every major institution united to sponsor and direct attacks on American cities. They refused to prosecute the destroyers, but prosecuted people who defended themselves.

When their opponents tried an extremely minor and tame version of it on January 6, an unarmed woman was executed on camera by a Capitol Police officer who was feted as a hero for his murder. And yes, if you're a Republican your own leaders kissed his feet as well.

If Trump accomplished nothing else, he brought the regime out of the shadows. We weren't supposed to have "regimes" in America, but that's an illusion we'll never have again. There is a regime, and they will kill you and burn your neighborhoods for challenging their power.

This is one of the reasons I refuse to accept the bait narrative that my enemies are in Russia. Russia can be a problematic country, and in normal times a geopolitical rival, but my enemies are in Washington, DC.

President Biden: What America Will and Will Not Do in Ukraine

By Joseph R. Biden Jr.
Mr. Biden is president of the United States.

...America’s goal is straightforward: We want to see a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with the means to deter and defend itself against further aggression.
...

We do not seek a war between NATO and Russia. As much as I disagree with Mr. Putin, and find his actions an outrage, the United States will not try to bring about his ouster in Moscow. So long as the United States or our allies are not attacked, we will not be directly engaged in this conflict, either by sending American troops to fight in Ukraine or by attacking Russian forces. We are not encouraging or enabling Ukraine to strike beyond its borders. We do not want to prolong the war just to inflict pain on Russia.

My principle throughout this crisis has been “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” I will not pressure the Ukrainian government — in private or public — to make any territorial concessions. It would be wrong and contrary to well-settled principles to do so.
...

...Let me be clear: Any use of nuclear weapons in this conflict on any scale would be completely unacceptable to us as well as the rest of the world and would entail severe consequences.

Americans will stay the course with the Ukrainian people because we understand that freedom is not free. That’s what we have always done whenever the enemies of freedom seek to bully and oppress innocent people, and it is what we are doing now. Vladimir Putin did not expect this degree of unity or the strength of our response. He was mistaken. If he expects that we will waver or fracture in the months to come, he is equally mistaken.

'I was wrong': Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen concedes she misread threat of inflation

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration acknowledged Tuesday that it was wrong to downplay the threat of rising inflation last year as the White House works to combat rising consumer prices that have hampered Joe Biden's presidency.

"I think I was wrong then about the path that inflation would take," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in an interview on CNN.

Yellen in March 2021 said inflation posed only a "small risk." Two months later, she said she didn't anticipate inflation would "be a problem." Earlier that spring, Biden signed his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 rescue plan into a law, providing a boost in spending that his critics blame for accelerating inflation.

"As I mentioned, there have been unanticipated and large shocks to the economy that boosted energy and food prices, and supply bottlenecks, that have affected our economy badly that I, at the time, didn't fully understand," Yellen told CNN. "But we recognize that now."

The warning signs have been flashing for two years now and Democrats continue to do ~nothing to address the erosion of the Hispanic vote which is actually *better* than the strategy of extra-party progressive organizations.

The issue here was clearly visible by summer 2020, but nobody wanted to hear that the anti-racism narrative wasn’t working with precisely the demographic group that was supposed to deliver the emerging democratic majority.

But the problem is actually pretty straightforward — Democrats had been counting on the votes of a significant number of Hispanics who self-identify as moderate or conservative and they flipped to the GOP.

There are tons of relevant tactical modalities around outreach, hiring, investment, media, misinformation, etc.

But none of that will get around the basic need to work on ideological/issue alignment just like with voters of other ethnic groups.

The partisanship of Black voters reflects unique aspects of American history and the organization of Black social institutions (very good book about this) that does not carry over to Asian or Hispanic voters and may be waning in the Black community too.

Yes, kink belongs at Pride. And I want my kids to see it. (WaPo)

...Kink embodies the freedom that Pride stands for, reminding attendees to unapologetically take up space as an act of resistance and celebration — refusing to bend to social pressure that asks us to be presentable. That’s a value I want my children to learn. Affirming the kink community helps our children to love themselves and others with courage and resilience.

Ukraine Security Services Hunt for Russia Supporters and Agents in Their Midst

...some Ukrainians continue to side with Moscow. And in a conflict that Ukraine sees as existential, Ukrainian security services are hunting for citizens that they view as abetting the enemy. That involves active pursuit of collaborators in Russian-held territory, some of whom have been targeted in recent assassination attempts, and detentions of suspected Russian agents.

“We do these raids almost every day,” said one of the SBU officers in Mr. Popov’s apartment
...

Many of those arrested are posting pro-Kremlin messages on social media, driven by loyalties to Russia and without any contact by the government in Moscow, the SBU says. Some take money from the Russians to do so. A handful were actively passing military information, such as Ukrainian artillery positions, to the enemy, according to the SBU.

Joe Biden Surrenders to Saudi Arabia

On the menu today: Less than three years after he pledged to make Saudi Arabia a pariah state for killing and dismembering Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, President Biden will travel to the kingdom and shake the hand of the man who ordered Khashoggi’s assassination. It is an embarrassing end to a story of hubris and shortsightedness, reflecting the American appetite for simple solutions to complicated problems. Governing is a lot harder than campaigning, as Biden has been forced to learn over and over again as his presidency continues.
...

It was never particularly realistic for Biden or any other presidential candidate to pledge to make Saudi Arabia a pariah. Even at the height of the recent boom of U.S. oil production, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia were too dependent upon each other and had too many mutual geopolitical interests:

- For starters, even as recently as May 2021, Saudi Arabia was the fourth-largest source of U.S. crude-oil imports, providing an average of 395,000 barrels per day of the 8.5 million barrels per day in gross U.S. crude-oil imports, behind Canada, Mexico, and Russia.

- Besides holding the world’s second-largest reserve of oil, Saudi Arabia is still the custodian of Mecca and Medina, and manages the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is expected to make at least once in their life — meaning that the Saudi government has an extremely influential role in shaping the discussions and perceptions of the U.S. within the Muslim world.

- The State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism stated in 2019 that, “Saudi Arabia maintained a high cooperation tempo with U.S. and international partners in a range of counterterrorism fields, including terrorist information sharing, monitoring of [foreign terrorist fighters], border security, countering unmanned aerial systems, and [countering violent extremism. The Saudi Arabian government worked to disrupt, and supported U.S. and international sanctions against, terrorist finance networks, focusing heavily on entities supporting Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Quds Force, Lebanese Hizballah, and other Iranian proxy groups active in the Gulf. . . . Saudi Arabia was a full partner and active participant in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and provided significant operational and logistical support for Coalition activities in Syria and Iraq.”

- Saudi Arabia is the largest buyer of American-made weapons.

- Saudi Arabia doesn’t control its neighbors, but it has considerable influence in the Arab world. There have been some small signs of an end to Saudi hostility to the state of Israel.

Biden says Ukraine might have to give Russia land in ‘negotiated settlement’

President Biden on Friday declined to rule out Ukraine having to cede part of its territory to Russia in order to end Moscow’s more than three-month-old invasion.

“Does Ukraine have to cede territory to achieve peace?” a reporter asked Biden after his remarks on the May jobs report.

“From the beginning, I’ve said and I’ve been — not everyone’s agreed with me — nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” Biden began his answer. “It’s their territory. I’m not going to tell them what they should and shouldn’t do.

“But it appears to me that at some point along the line, there’s going to have to be a negotiated settlement here,” the president added. “And what that entails, I don’t know. I don’t think anybody knows at the time. But in the meantime, we’re gonna continue to put the Ukrainians in a position where they can defend themselves.”

In a break with the past, U.S. is using intel to fight an info war with Russia, even when the intel isn't rock solid

It was an attention-grabbing assertion that made headlines around the world: U.S. officials said they had indications suggesting Russia might be preparing to use chemical agents in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden later said it publicly. But three U.S. officials told NBC News this week there is no evidence Russia has brought any chemical weapons near Ukraine. They said the U.S. released the information to deter Russia from using the banned munitions.

It’s one of a string of examples of the Biden administration’s breaking with recent precedent by deploying declassified intelligence as part of an information war against Russia.

Spanish Court Demands Pompeo Testify on Apparent Plot to Kill Assange

Donald Trump’s former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been ordered to appear in a Spanish court to explain a possible U.S. government plot to kidnap and assassinate WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, ABC Spain reports, citing legal sources close to the case.  Yahoo News broke the news of the alleged 2017 plot last September, reporting that Trump’s then-CIA Director Pompeo wanted revenge after WikiLeaks published a massive trove of sensitive CIA hacking tools.

Kidnapping, assassination and a London shoot-out: Inside the CIA's secret war plans against WikiLeaks (Yahoo News, 2021)

In 2017, as Julian Assange began his fifth year holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London, the CIA plotted to kidnap the WikiLeaks founder, spurring heated debate among Trump administration officials over the legality and practicality of such an operation.
...

This Yahoo News investigation, based on conversations with more than 30 former U.S. officials — eight of whom described details of the CIA’s proposals to abduct Assange — reveals for the first time one of the most contentious intelligence debates of the Trump presidency and exposes new details about the U.S. government’s war on WikiLeaks. It was a campaign spearheaded by Pompeo that bent important legal strictures, potentially jeopardized the Justice Department’s work toward prosecuting Assange, and risked a damaging episode in the United Kingdom, the United States’ closest ally.

Mike Pompeo on Whether U.S. Plotted to Kill Assange | The Megyn Kelly Show

"I can't say much about this other than whoever those 30 people who allegedly spoke with one of these reporters they should all be prosecuted for speaking about classified activity inside the central intelligence agency... you should know I take seriously my responsibilities to protect that information. The second thing: there is no doubt Wikileaks is in fact a non-state hostile intelligence service they are actively seeking to steal american classified information, this isn't good reporting, this isn't asking someone to leak, this is working to steal secrets from the united states of america, we have a responsibility to protect that information and the trump administration worked doggedly every day to do just that."

We Can’t Be Ukraine Hawks Forever

...for all their defensive successes, we have not yet established that Ukraine’s military can regain significant amounts of territory in the country’s south and east. Yet we have Anne Applebaum of The Atlantic insisting that only Putin’s defeat and indeed “humiliation” can restore European stability, while elsewhere in the same magazine Casey Michel calls for dismantling the Russian Federation, framed as the “decolonization” of Russia’s remaining empire, as the only policy for lasting peace.

Or again, the United States has currently committed an extraordinary sum to back Ukraine — far more than we spent in foreign aid to Afghanistan in any recent year, for instance — and our support roughly trebles the support offered by the European Union. Yet when this newspaper’s editorial board raised questions about the sustainability of such support, the response from many Ukraine hawks was a furious how dare you — with an emphasis, to quote Benjamin Wittes of the Brookings Institution, on Ukraine’s absolute right to fight “until every inch of their territory is free,” America’s strictly “modest” and “advisory” role in Ukrainian decision making and the importance of offering Kyiv, if not a blank check, at least a “very very big check with more checks to follow.”

These theories all seem to confuse what is desirable with what is likely, and what is morally ideal with what is strategically achievable. I have written previously about the risks of nuclear escalation in the event of a Russian military collapse, risks that hawkish theories understate. But given the state of the war right now, the more likely near-future scenario is one where Russian collapse remains a pleasant fancy, the conflict becomes stalemated and frozen, and we have to put our Ukrainian policy on a sustainable footing without removing Putin’s regime or dismantling the Russian empire.

In that scenario, our plan cannot be to keep writing countless checks while tiptoeing modestly around the Ukrainians and letting them dictate the ends to which our guns and weaponry are used. The United States is an embattled global hegemon facing threats more significant than Russia. We are also an internally divided country led by an unpopular president whose majorities may be poised for political collapse. So if Kyiv and Moscow are headed for a multiyear or even multidecade frozen conflict, we will need to push Ukraine toward its most realistic rather than its most ambitious military strategy. And just as urgently, we will need to shift some of the burden of supporting Kyiv from our own budget to our European allies.
Ron DeSantis vetoes $35M Tampa Bay Rays baseball complex after team’s gun control tweet: report

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed $35 million in government spending for a new practice facility for the Tampa Bay Rays after the baseball team posted a tweet in support of gun control, according to a report.

The move comes just weeks after the GOP governor — and rumored 2024 presidential hopeful — stripped Disney of its self-governing status after the Mouse House came out in opposition to a new law banning explicit sex and gender education for young children.

ln the most recent skirmish, DeSantis penalized the Tampa franchise after a tweet from the team’s official Twitter account took a swing at the nation’s gun laws following the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, according to the news site OutKick.
...

The governor defended his veto of the sports complex at a press briefing Friday.

“I don’t support giving taxpayer dollars to professional sports stadiums,” he said. “Companies are free to engage or not engage with whatever discourse they want, but clearly … it’s inappropriate to subsidize political activism of a private corporation.”

The move comes as the Biden administration is using heavy-handed measures to enshrine gender ideology into federal law.
