There is a darker side of this. Certain extremists existed in the years not so long ago in the mathematics fields, both from Ukraine and Russia, exercising extreme pressure to the children from parents for the academic achievements.
The pressure was so tremendous that the physical scars were mistaken as sexual torture on a teenage girl by the welfare officers in the US, only for them to find out later, all that was for pushing her to study harder. Of course, they were startled by the discovery.

But would they achieve this much without so much pressure? Perhaps not.

I see it as a trade with demon. Parents and children, can trade their sexuality and individualism for an extreme achievement academically. The strong sexual desire, sexual tension, as if an amount of burning fuel, can be deprived and used to fuel intelligence instead, something mentioned as early as in the books by John Money.  Certainly I am the type of person horrified by this approach, but it seems to be a tempting choice for many others, and they have chosen so accordingly. It is an exchange I will never dare to get even close, because I believe in humanity more.
