You recollected that a student said to you, "Mr XXX, I know you're a good man, you interested in history, but ..." The key is the "but." This is a typical CCP-style polite threat. In other words, they give you a permission or a compliment, followed by a request after "but." If you do not comply, they revoke everything before "but."
The latest case, "and it's no problem to discuss current politics, but please don't call China a supporter," has the same pattern. And it is precisely the pattern that betrayed to me, in the true request, supporter = 支.
