我对“中国未来如何”这个问题兴趣越来越小，也越来越感觉答案难以预测。我同意大趋势是不会自由化，基于两个宏观的理由：
一、我相信文化自由主义不是所谓的“‘普世价值”，换句话说，不可能把它推广到全球各个角落。它的核心价值和文明延续所需的价值不完全重合——这一点也许需要漫长的历史和广袤的地域来展现。在我们目前所见的范围，即令在西方主导的秩序使之可以施行的环境中，它也已经出现退潮的迹象。到汉地再次对西方影响高度开放时，文化自由主义未必像今天这样强势了。
二、汉地十八省的民意基底不倾向自由主义，即使各地分治也是如此。正如俄罗斯人灵魂深处对帝国的偏爱会在现实中呈现为对抗自由主义国际秩序的强力，汉人被他们的历史和传统塑造的灵魂在没有外力规训的情况下会不由自主地凝结成对抗自由主义国内秩序的意志。汉人集体无意识中的非自由主义的一个征象是，即使是那些有意识反支反共的汉人，在他们依赖自己的直觉做判断时，也常常表现出与自由主义不相容的性情。一个切近的例子是本论坛许多人对战争中受侵略一方反人道行为的态度。有人会说，此种直觉和性情是共产党政治训教的结果。问题是，这个民族历史上受过与共产党那一套异质的政治训教吗？共产党并没有在俄国人或者中国人的灵魂深处闹革命。
以上两点是很粗略的观察，我目前没能力也不打算论证它们。串联两点的是这个信念：自由主义的一些关键因素只能吸引和接纳被特定的历史传统和现实环境塑造的灵魂。它不站在历史时空之外或者终末之处。
